Dani Rovira

Dani Rovira came to commercial film without training at a classic acting school or piling up credits in auteur shorts. His craft was forged in dive bars and on the live comedy circuit of Paramount Comedy during the 2000s, where a comic risked everything with a microphone and five minutes of attention.

He had studied Sports Science at the University of Granada. But his true calling lay in the spoken word, in observational monologue, and in an innate ability to connect with audiences through instant laughter.

No one saw what happened in 2014 coming.

The Fifty-Six Million Phenomenon

En 2014 el director Emilio Martínez-Lázaro lo eligió para protagonizar Spanish Affair junto a Clara Lago y Karra Elejalde. El resultado reventó cualquier cálculo de taquilla en España, con una recaudación final de 56 millones de euros y casi diez millones de espectadores en las salas.

That blockbuster earned him the Goya Award for Best Revelation Actor in 2015. Overnight, production companies wanted his face on every romantic comedy poster.

The industry tried to squeeze the formula until it ran dry.

Así que llegaron proyectos en cadena. En 2015 estrenó The Bucket List y la secuela inmediata Spanish Affair 2, que sumó otros 36 millones de euros. Rovira asumió además la conducción de las galas de los Premios Goya durante tres ediciones consecutivas, un escaparate con audiencias millonarias que también le acarreó desgaste público y críticas feroces en redes sociales.

The Drama's Break and the Return to the Mud

En 2016 decidió buscar registros ajenos al chiste fácil con 100 Meters, dirigida por Marcel Barrena. En el filme interpretó a Ramón Arroyo, un deportista diagnosticado con esclerosis múltiple, un papel que exigió una transformación física severa y una contención dramática inédita en sus trabajos previos.

Two years later, he headlined Superlópez (2018), the comic book adaptation directed by Javier Ruiz Caldera. The film grossed 12 million euros with a level of digital effects that was unusual for Spanish productions of the time.

In March 2020, he announced that he had Hodgkin lymphoma. Medical treatment brought his career to a sudden halt, but in August of that same year he announced complete remission after six months of chemotherapy.

In 2021, he returned to film with Mediterráneo, again under Barrena's direction. The film depicted the beginnings of the NGO Open Arms on the island of Lesbos, sharing the frame with Eduard Fernández during a complex shoot at sea.

Late Risks and Uneven Box Office

In 2024, he returned to the subject of illness through fiction in El bus de la vida, directed by Ibon Cormenzana, playing a music teacher undergoing cancer treatment. The film sought a balance between tenderness and bitter humor in the valleys of Biscay.

That same summer, the comedy Cuerpo escombro (2024), by Curro Velázquez, hit theaters.

But audiences didn't respond.

The film ended its commercial run with just 1.6 million euros in box office receipts and a openly hostile critical reception.
