Alejandro Amenábar cast a TV host in her late thirties to play Julia in The Sea Inside. The first months of 2003 were buzzing, and industry insiders were stunned.
Nobody in the industry gave her a chance.
Belén Rueda had spent a whole decade in Spanish homes through the small screen. She had shared awards with Emilio Aragón on VIP Noche in the early nineties and later moved into fiction newsrooms on Periodistas. In 2003, the entire country knew her as Lucía Gómez on Los Serrano, a comedy of errors that broke ratings records week after week.
That image of a TV comedy star weighed a ton. But Amenábar saw in her eyes the pent-up pain needed for a lawyer ravaged by a degenerative disease. The shoot demanded a severe physical transformation and a restrained physicality that caught even the toughest critics off guard.
At the 2005 ceremony she won the Goya for Best Breakthrough Actress at age 39. That statuette was more than a personal award. It was the definitive collapse of the wall separating TV studios from the respect given to auteur cinema.
Juan Antonio Bayona's call in 2006 confirmed that her move into film was no mere coincidence. The Catalan director was looking for a mother capable of carrying the dramatic weight of a supernatural thriller without resorting to melodrama. And Rueda agreed to lock herself away in the Asturian mansion of The Orphanage.
Over seven weeks of filming under the northern rain, she endured long days of mud, cold and constant psychological tension. The commercial result far exceeded the production company's projections.
The film earned more than 25 million euros at the Spanish box office during its theatrical run in 2007. It was the most-watched title of that year and opened the door to massive international distribution. Producers discovered that her face projected an unbeatable mix of maternal vulnerability and fierce determination.
Spanish commercial horror had found its face.
Guillem Morales rode that same momentum in 2010 for The Orphanage Sight. The actress shot much of the film in the dark to experience her character's progressive loss of sight. Two years later Oriol Paulo cast her to open the plot of The Body in 2012, with the film starting on her corpse inside a forensic morgue.
Because Rueda understood early on that genre cinema demanded crushing physical rigor. Rather than shy away from physically tense scenes, she wrung every bit of suspense out of them.
In 2017, Álex de la Iglesia seated her at a tense table among friends to film Perfect Strangers. There she unleashed a biting sharpness that many didn't think fit her style after years of dodging easy comedy.
But extreme stories kept dominating her schedule. In 2018 she traveled to the Congo jungle to shoot El cuaderno de Sara under the direction of Norberto López Amado, a shoot where high temperatures and stomach infections decimated the crew in the middle of Africa.
So she alternated African mud with stories set in closed interiors. In 2023 she starred in La ermita by Carlota Pereda and the fantasy comedy Fenómenas, before taking on the role of a relentless gymnastics coach in Free Fall, directed by Laura Jou, in 2024.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2025 she appeared in the black comedy Un funeral de locos and the psychological thriller Reversión. In early 2026 she premiered the horror drama El vestido in commercial theaters, sharing scenes for the first time with her daughter Belén Écija. The feature had a budget of 1.8 million euros and closed its first weekend in theaters with box office earnings of 310,000 euros.
