Mario Casas moved to Madrid from Barcelona at seventeen with only a couple of commercials on his resume. In 2006, he landed his first major role in the series SMS, but his appearance in Los hombres de Paco in 2007 is what raised his profile in Spain. At the time, producers were looking for young faces to attract teen audiences, and he fit the physical profile that commercial television demanded.
The industry quickly typecast him in roles as a shirtless rebel.
In 2010, he starred in Three Steps Above Heaven, and the film grossed more than ten million euros in Spanish theaters. The fan frenzy was massive. High school binders were covered with his face, but the actor was already planning how to move away from the teen heartthrob image. He knew that the label of a mass idol has an expiration date unless there is dramatic substance behind it.
And the audience responded.
In 2012, he worked under Alberto Rodríguez in Grupo 7. It was a smart move because he set romance aside to play a police officer in Seville during the 92 Expo. Critics started to see his work in a new light. He was no longer just the boy on magazine covers but an actor capable of holding his own in a dry, violent police drama.
From there, he took on projects with major directors. In 2013, he shot Las brujas de Zugarramurdi with Álex de la Iglesia, and in 2015 he took part in Palmeras en la nieve. That production had a budget of ten million euros and required a complex shoot in Colombia and Equatorial Guinea. The physical demands of his roles became a constant in the way he works.
In 2016, he starred in Contratiempo under the direction of Oriol Paulo. The film performed very well at the international box office, especially in China, where it earned surprising revenue for a Spanish production. Mario Casas proved to be a safe bet for the suspense genre seeking global distribution on streaming platforms.
But recognition from the Academy took a while to arrive.
In 2020, he landed the role of Dani in No matarás. It was a tense, physically demanding performance that earned him the Goya Award for Best Actor in 2021. That award helped close a chapter of validation within an industry that had watched him with some skepticism for years. The win at the national awards came as no surprise to those who had followed his career in genre cinema.
In 2023, he made the leap to directing with Mi soledad tiene alas. He co-wrote the screenplay with Deborah François and set the story in the outlying neighborhoods where he himself grew up. Rather than seeking the spotlight in front of the camera, he handed the weight of the story to his brother, Óscar Casas. The film was shot on location in Barcelona over several weeks in 2022.
In 2024, Escape premiered, directed by Rodrigo Cortés and executive produced by Martin Scorsese. Filming lasted eight weeks and took place mainly on locations in Madrid. The film had a top-tier crew to recreate a suffocating, Kafkaesque atmosphere in a fictional prison.
Filming of Escape used large-format cameras and anamorphic lenses to achieve a specific visual texture in the prison interiors.
