It's nine in the morning, and a bar in downtown Madrid opens its doors as it does every day. The place fills with a wonderfully mixed crowd, each person with their own business and their own breakfast. One of them is in a hurry and decides to leave as quickly as possible. The moment he steps onto the street, something happens that puts him out of reach, and nobody inside can explain it. The customers are trapped within the bar's walls, unable to see what's happening on the other side of the glass and unable to go out and help. Directed by Álex de la Iglesia, the film features an ensemble cast led by Blanca Suárez and Mario Casas.

Trivia about The Bar

The premise was inspired by experiences Álex de la Iglesia and Jorge Guerricaechevarría had at the El Palentino bar, but the shoot didn't take place there. Instead, it was filmed in a renovated grocery store on Plaza de los Mostenses.

The film screened out of competition at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival before its commercial release in Spain.

In its first weekend in Spain, it grossed 900 000 euros, finishing second behind Beauty and the Beast and surpassing the box office of Mi gran noche, the director's previous film.

Marta Medina of El Confidencial felt that De la Iglesia crowns the director as the "king of pathos" and described the film's ending as "thrilling."

Owen Gleiberman of Variety wrote that it's "easily the worst movie" he had seen at that edition of the Berlin Film Festival.

"The Bar" won the Silver Méliès for Best European Feature in the international competition at the 2017 Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival.

The film drew 475,302 moviegoers in Spain and ranked among the five most-watched films in the first half of 2017.

It received Goya Award nominations for sound, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, and art direction, though it didn't win any of them.
