Synopsis of 30 Coins

Álex de la Iglesia directs this horror, mystery and dark fantasy series, which he co-wrote with Jorge Guerricaechevarría for HBO Spain. Father Manuel Vergara is an exorcist, a former boxer and a former inmate. He lives in Pedraza, a town in Segovia, determined to leave his past behind and start a new life. However, paranormal events begin to happen in the town. To try to solve them, Vergara turns to Paco, the mayor, and Elena, the town's veterinarian. The mystery revolves around a coin the priest owns, which could be one of the thirty pieces of silver for which Judas betrayed Jesus. Eduard Fernández, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Megan Montaner and Macarena Gómez lead the cast.

Trivia about 30 Coins

The series was shot in Jerusalem, Rome, New York and Paris, although Spanish sets were built for the scenes set in Aleppo.

Najwa Nimri announced joining the cast on the red carpet at the 9th Feroz Awards, before HBO Max confirmed the second season.

The first season has a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 reviews.

Rosie Knight of IGN notes that the series also works as an Indiana Jones-style artifact hunt, and gives it a 8 out of 10.

Scout Tafoya of RogerEbert.com describes the creators as authors of a Catholic version of the cosmic horror of H. P. Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgson.

HBO Max did not renew «30 Coins» for a third season on May 20, 2024, although Álex de la Iglesia said the episodes were already written and that the story had been conceived as a trilogy.

Eduard Fernández won the Fotogramas de Plata for Best TV Actor in 2024 for his work in «30 Coins», while Najwa Nimri was nominated in the Best Actress category.
