Synopsis of Nocturne

A former homicide detective moves with his family to a small town in Pennsylvania. Soon, the community begins suffering attacks from a serial killer serving his sentence in the basement of the Riverside psychiatric hospital. The former detective must investigate crimes that seem linked to a man locked away, while the medical staff and authorities try to understand what is happening in the town. Rowan Joffé created the series, produced by Apple TV, and Liev Schreiber, Zazie Beetz and Stephen Graham lead the cast. Graham plays Jurek Walter, the Riverside inmate, and Rory Culkin brings to life Karl Anders, a nurse at the institution.

Trivia about Nocturne

Tom Hardy was originally set to star and serve as executive producer, but Stephen Graham ended up taking the role in the series.

Filming began in the summer of 2025 in Pittsburgh, and in November scenes were shot in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, under the working title Parallax.

The series is based on the novel The Sandman by Joona Linna, written by the husband-and-wife duo Alexander Ahndoril and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril, who publish under the name Lars Kepler.

Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 83% approval rating based on 18 reviews, and Metacritic assigns it 73 out of 100, with reviews described as generally favorable.

Stephen Graham prepared to play serial killer Jurek Walter by watching documentaries and footage of real criminals as part of the preparation for the role.

The adaptation moves the story from Scandinavia to western Pennsylvania, a creative change made by Rowan Joffé and John Hlavin compared with Lars Kepler's novels.

The first season consists of ten episodes, and Apple TV scheduled the first two for the premiere, with a new episode every Friday until December 25, 2026.
