Synopsis of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

At the 16 Precinct in Manhattan, within the New York Police Department (NYPD), works the Special Victims Unit, a group of detectives dedicated to investigating sex crimes. The leads are Senior Detectives Elliot Stabler and John Munch, who share cases with their colleagues Olivia Benson and Brian Cassidy. Their job is to reconstruct each crime, identify those responsible and prepare the charges together with the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, with the goal of getting justice for the victims. Created by Dick Wolf, the series airs on NBC and stars Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni, who play Benson and Stabler. Each episode opens with a new case that tests the unit.

Trivia about Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

The idea came from a real 1986 case, that of Robert Chambers, who strangled a woman he was dating in Manhattan's Central Park and claimed it was "consensual rough sex."
Wolf saw from the start that Hargitay and Meloni had perfect chemistry, and both were his first choice for the lead roles.
Richard Belzer made it a condition of joining the series that Dean Winters be his partner, whom he saw as a younger brother.
Ice-T initially agreed to only four episodes, but ended up staying on as Munch's permanent partner.
After the premiere of its twenty-first season in September 2019, the show became the longest-running live-action primetime series in American television history.
NBC renewed "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" for a 28 season, set to premiere on October 8, 2026. The renewal was announced the same day as the cancellation of the spin-off "Law & Order: Organized Crime" after five seasons.
Season 28 will keep Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T, Kelli Giddish, Peter Scanavino, Aimé Donna Kelly and Kevin Kane in the cast, with Michele Fazekas returning as showrunner.
