Synopsis of Luther

John Luther is a Detective Chief Inspector with London's Serious Crime Unit, a dedicated cop with a remarkable gift for solving cases. Idris Elba brings him to life in this British series created by Neil Cross and aired on BBC One. Luther is obsessive and, when he gets caught up in his fixations, can be dangerous to others and to himself. He has always paid a high price for putting his work above everything else, a trait that is both a blessing and a curse for those around him. In the first episode, Luther investigates Alice Morgan, a brilliant psychopath. The series explores how far the detective can keep himself apart from the darkness of the crimes he pursues.

Trivia about Luther

The American version that Fox began developing in 2014, with Neil Cross as writer and executive producer, was officially shelved in 2017.
Neil Cross conceived the series under the working title The Calling, which was later used as the title of the prequel novel.
The opening title uses a shorter version of «Paradise Circus» by Massive Attack, featuring vocals by Hope Sandoval, taken from the album Heligoland.
TF1 commissioned a French version filmed in and around Paris, whose first episode drew 4.8 million viewers.
The Korean version changed its title to Less Than Evil, in Korean 나쁜 형사, and aired on MBC on December 3, 2018.
The team had trouble finding its lead because Idris Elba was turning down other projects, but agreed to read the script for «Luther» and called four days later to say he had connected with the character.
«Luther» won the Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award for Best Television Episode in 2010 for its first episode, written by Neil Cross.
The fifth season brought Wunmi Mosaku in as the new officer Catherine Halliday; filming began in London in January 2018.
