Patrick Malahide was born in 1945 in Reading under the name Patrick Gerald Duggan. His parents were Irish immigrants, and that cultural duality shaped his approach to acting from the very beginning. He studied at Douai School in Berkshire and, before turning thirty, was already immersed in the British regional theater circuit.
He made his television debut in 1976 with the series The Flight of the Heron. It was a modest but effective start. However, his angular face and a gaze that seems to judge whoever he's speaking to opened the doors of television for him for good.
No one plays icy authority with as much precision as he does.
In 1979 he landed the role that gave him professional stability for nearly a decade. He played Inspector Chisholm in the series Minder and became the perfect nemesis of the leads. British audiences accepted him as the public face of a relentless and somewhat stiff law.
Malahide didn't want to be trapped in the London cop archetype. In 1986 he worked on The Singing Detective under the direction of Jon Amiel. It was a complex job in which he had to split himself into several characters within a hallucinatory narrative. Malahide has always preferred scripts that demand intellectual effort from the viewer.
And the risk paid off.
Hollywood cast him as the sophisticated and dangerous European. In 1999 he appeared in The World Is Not Enough as part of the James Bond franchise. There he played Swiss banker Lachaise and showed he could hold his own against Pierce Brosnan without blinking. During that same period he shot Quills in 2000 alongside Geoffrey Rush and Kate Winslet.
Despite his international contracts, he never abandoned the BBC period productions. He appeared in Middlemarch in 1994 and years later in The Paradise during 2012. His deep voice made him indispensable for any drama that needed an aristocrat with a dark past.
In 2012 he joined the cast of Game of Thrones to bring Balon Greyjoy to life. His portrayal of the Lord of the Iron Islands was brief on screen but heavy in physical presence. He played a bitter father rooted in violent traditions who despised the weakness of his own son. Filming on the coasts of Northern Ireland was especially demanding because of the weather.
He didn't slow down after the end of the HBO series. In 2022 he played the Baron of Selve in the production The Serpent Queen. His features have grown sharper over the decades, allowing him to play with an unsettling fragility he never explored before.
Malahide still works with an almost military discipline.
In 2023 he appeared in the science fiction series Bodies for Netflix, playing Ladbroke. A year later, in 2024, he took part in the second season of The Lazarus Project, playing the character Samson. Filming for his scenes was centered at the Bristol studios during the spring of that year.
