The camera that never stops moving

Danny Boyle almost became a priest but ended up directing Ewan McGregor while he dove into the filthiest toilet in Scotland. He was born in 1956 to a working-class family in Radcliffe. Catholicism left him with an obsession with guilt and redemption that surfaces in almost all of his scripts.

He started in theater, worked with the Royal Court before moving into television with the BBC. In 1994 he shot Shallow Grave on a ridiculously small budget. That dark comedy about a corpse in the attic gave him the keys to the British film industry.

And then 1996 arrived.

With Trainspotting, the director broke the visual language of social realism that dominated the United Kingdom. He used saturated colors, wide-angle lenses and a soundtrack that sold millions of copies. Boyle made heroin use look like an MTV music video without losing the rawness of Irvine Welsh's story.

The Thai misstep and the digital comeback

Hollywood came knocking with a blank check to adapt The Beach in 2000. The shoot in Thailand was a production nightmare and drew harsh reviews. But the director didn't sink. He returned to London and shot 28 Days Later in 2002 using low-resolution digital cameras.

That technical decision changed modern horror cinema. The streets of an empty London, filmed at dawn, gave a gritty, real texture that celluloid could not capture. But Boyle has always preferred energy over technical purity.

In 2008 he traveled to Bombay to shoot Slumdog Millionaire. The film nearly went straight to DVD because distributors lacked confidence in it. In the end it won eight Academy Awards, including Best Director.

The gamble paid off.

Frenetic pace and state commissions

Boyle turned down the chance to direct the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games until he was given full creative control. He created a spectacle that included the Queen parachuting in and a tribute to Britain's National Health Service. It was a massive ratings hit.

In 2015 he was hired to direct Steve Jobs from a script by Aaron Sorkin. The film was structured like a three-act play, shot in different formats (16mm, 35mm and digital) to reflect technological evolution. The box office failure was notable despite good reviews.

He kept working on varied projects, including the sequel T2 Trainspotting in 2017 and the musical fable Yesterday in 2019. In 2022, he premiered the series Pistol about the Sex Pistols for Disney Plus. But his interest in the punk movement never faded.

In 2025 he began production on 28 Years Later with an estimated budget of $75 million.
