Ewen Bremner has a face that looks like it was sketched by a hurried caricaturist. His bulging eyes and a jaw that never quite fits together won him the role of his life before he turned twenty-five.
But before he was Spud, he was Renton.
In the stage version of Trainspotting, the Scottish actor played the cynical lead. When Danny Boyle decided to bring Irvine Welsh's novel to the big screen in 1996, he asked him to take a step down in the group's pecking order.
That change of role defined his career forever. Bremner took on the part of the weakest link in the chain and built a character around physical awkwardness and an almost childlike vulnerability.
British cinema of the '90s can't be understood without his restless presence. And that's because Bremner doesn't act with his voice but with his shoulders and hands.
Ridley Scott called him for Black Hawk Down in 2001 because he needed soldiers who didn't look like runway models. On the Morocco set, the actor learned to handle real weapons while dust stung his eyes.
That same year, he appeared in Pearl Harbor. Michael Bay was looking for the necessary contrast between the perfect leads and the everyday guy who suffers the consequences of war.
He earned a lot of money from those big-budget productions.
But he never stopped taking on small projects back home. For Bremner, the size of the paycheck matters less than how odd the character is that he gets to inhabit.
In 1993, he had already made a mark in Naked under Mike Leigh. That was the first time the industry realized his look fit better on the margins of society than at the center of the frame.
In 2017, he revisited his most famous role in T2 Trainspotting. The reunion with his castmates showed that his character was the only one who still held on to some humanity in a world of broken adults.
No one expected that kid from Edinburgh to hold up so well.
That same year, he entered the superhero universe with Wonder Woman. He played Charlie, a sniper with post-traumatic stress who would rather sing than shoot.
Bremner filmed his scenes at Leavesden Studios under strict secrecy. He spent months training for a role that mixed action with psychological trauma.
Between 2022 and 2023, he worked under David Jenkins on the series Our Flag Means Death, bringing Buttons to life. His gift for physical comedy shone once again in a world of absurd pirates and wooden ships.
In 2021, he played record executive Alan McGee in Creation Stories. The film was shot mainly in London and Manchester, with a script written by his old friend Irvine Welsh.
The film's final budget came to five million British pounds.
