Steven Spielberg saw in his gaze a strange mix of fragility and sadism. In 1993, the world met a Nazi officer who drank wine while shooting prisoners from his balcony. Ralph Fiennes wasn't looking for fame, but the industry caught him after that role in Schindler's List.
He won a BAFTA and came close to an Oscar.
His training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art gave him a technical foundation few of his generation could match. Before moving into film, he spent years reciting Shakespeare on London's stages. That discipline explains why he prefers silence to constant media exposure.
In 1996, he starred in The English Patient under the direction of Anthony Minghella. The desert shoot was a physical ordeal, but the film was a global box office hit. Fiennes played a burned, dying cartographer who remembered an impossible love.
The film grossed 232 million dollars and cemented his image as the tormented leading man of the nineties.
But he hated labels.
He turned down lucrative contracts to return to the stage and play Hamlet in 1995. He won a Tony Award and made it clear that his loyalty lay with the text. In 1999, he worked with his sister Martha Fiennes on Onegin, a personal project that failed to win over audiences. It was a financial failure that forced him to rethink his future in production.
The decision to accept the role of Lord Voldemort in 2005 changed his relationship with the general public. He first appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire without a nose and wearing layers of prosthetic makeup. That transformation let him become the nightmare of a generation without losing his anonymity on the streets of London.
In 2011, he decided it was time to take charge on set.
He directed Coriolanus, a modern adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy shot in Belgrade. It was a dry, violent exercise in style that didn't aim to please anyone. The budget was just 7.7 million dollars, and critics praised the narrative rhythm of his work behind the camera.
In 2014, he broke his serious-guy image with The Grand Budapest Hotel. Wes Anderson cast him as Gustave H., and Fiennes revealed a comic timing nobody suspected. His fast-paced dialogue and obsession with perfume earned him Golden Globe nominations. The actor who scared the world in the nineties now preferred satire.
He replaced Judi Dench as M in the James Bond franchise starting with Skyfall in 2012. His portrayal of the head of the secret service was far more bureaucratic and cold. That British restraint carried over into his later work.
In 2024, he starred in Conclave, a thriller about intrigue inside the Vatican in which he plays a cardinal in the middle of a crisis of faith. For 2025, 28 Years Later, the sequel in the horror universe of Danny Boyle, is scheduled for release.
He lives in a house in the South of France when he isn't filming.
In 2017, he received Serbian citizenship for his support of the film industry in that country.
