David Wheeler was born in a back-room shop in Blackpool, surrounded by toys and joke novelties. Before turning twenty, he played guitar in a punk band called 66S and had no intention of stepping onto a stage to recite Shakespeare. But curiosity led him to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
He changed his last name to his mother's maiden name to avoid duplicate names in the actors' union.
His first steps in British television were modest, and they fed a bank account that often hovered in the red. He worked in commercials and small parts in procedural series, where he learned that the camera detects any trace of a lie.
Mike Leigh didn't give him a fixed script to shoot Naked. The director preferred that Thewlis build Johnny through months of improvisation and walks through London's darkest neighborhoods. The result was an electric blast of philosophical verbal sparring and contained violence that left the Cannes jury speechless.
In May 1993, he won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival for a performance no one has managed to replicate.
And the gamble paid off.
American studios came knocking right away. But Thewlis never fit the traditional leading-man mold, with his lanky frame and a gaze that always seems to hide something dark. He agreed to take part in The Island of Dr. Moreau in 1996, and it turned into a logistical disaster that almost killed his desire to keep working on big studio films.
Val Kilmer and Marlon Brando turned the set into a battlefield of egos.
Alfonso Cuarón's call to join the Harry Potter saga in 2004 gave him a financial security that few character actors manage to achieve. He played Remus Lupin in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and stayed with the franchise until the end. That melancholy werewolf introduced him to a generation of viewers who didn't know his more aggressive side.
He wrote a novel titled The Late Hector Kipling in 2007 to purge his obsessions with the art world.
In 2017 he appeared in the third season of the series Fargo under disgusting makeup to bring V.M. Varga to life. His character was a villain who vomited to manage his anxiety and used financial capital as a weapon of mass destruction. Critics were won over by his ability to generate disgust and fascination at the same time.
In 2021 he starred alongside Olivia Colman in the miniseries Landscapers. It is a story based on real crimes in which he plays a man obsessed with classic cinema who ends up burying his in-laws in the garden.
The year 2025 is listed as the premiere date of the series Sherlock & Daughter, where he plays a fading, twilight version of Sherlock Holmes.
Filming the Avatar sequels directed by James Cameron required him to work in motion-capture suits for months.
