David Hayman was born in Bridgeton, a working-class neighborhood of Glasgow, in 1948. His training was no bed of roses, since Scotland's film industry at the time was a barren ground for the children of the working class. But the Citizens Theatre in his hometown became a refuge, and there he learned that acting is, above all, a matter of resilience.
On that stage he honed his craft playing classic and modern roles with an intensity that soon caught the attention of television producers. His face, marked by lines that seem to tell stories of shipyards and cold, became his best working tool.
Film came later.
In the late 1970s he was already working with directors of the caliber of John Mackenzie on A Sense of Freedom (1979). In this film he played the convict Jimmy Boyle, and his performance was so raw that many critics wondered whether they were watching an actor or a documentary about prison violence.
Hayman was not satisfied with just standing in front of the camera, and in 1990 he decided to make the leap into directing with Silent Scream. The film follows a man locked in the special unit of Barlinnie Prison, and it won a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. It was a resounding success that did not pull him away from his roots, since he always preferred socially charged stories.
But his career as a director did not overshadow his work as an actor. In 1997 he accepted the role of Superintendent Mike Walker in the series Trial & Retribution. The show stayed on air until 2009 and made him a familiar face in millions of British homes.
And the gamble paid off.
Because Hayman knows that a strong supporting role is worth more than a forgettable lead. He proved it in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), where his role as Pavel, the Jewish prisoner who works in the kitchen, is the emotional core of the film. He didn't need grand speeches to convey the horror of the Holocaust.
As the decades went by, his schedule kept filling up with international projects. In 2015 he took part in the version of Macbeth directed by Justin Kurzel, and in 2017 he joined the cast of the series Taboo alongside Tom Hardy. His ability to fit into big-budget productions without losing his essence is rare.
But his real strength lies in the silences.
In 2023 he joined the cast of The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, the feature-length finale of the famous Viking saga. Shortly after, in 2024, he took part in the Spain-shot series Land of Women, where he shared scenes with Eva Longoria and Carmen Maura. His on-screen presence remains magnetic even past the age of seventy-five.
That same year he shot the new version of The Crow (2024) under director Rupert Sanders. Hayman plays a supporting character in this reimagining of James O'Barr's comic, which had a budget of 50 million dollars. His contract for this shoot included specific clauses about the filming schedule on location in Prague.
