Christopher Fairbank has the kind of face that seems sculpted by the British climate. In 1983, his life changed when he accepted the role of Albert Moxey in the series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. That character, a bricklayer with pyromaniac tendencies, took him from the theater stage into the living rooms of millions of Britons.
Fairbank is a supporting actor by conviction.
Before turning to television, he spent years training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. But his classical training didn't stop him from embracing commercial genres with striking ease. In 1989, he shot The Batman under the direction of Tim Burton, and had the privilege of being the first criminal the hero of Gotham interrogated on a rooftop. That scene defined his status as the perfect supporting player for tense situations.
And the audience recognized him instantly.
In 1992 he took part in Alien 3 under the direction of David Fincher. He played Murphy in a production that was a logistical mess but allowed him to prove he could hold his own alongside major stars. His approach to work is dry and direct. He rarely asks for big changes to the script, preferring to adapt to what the director needs in each take.
The nineties were a busy period for him in the London studios. In 1997, he played Dr. Mactilburgh in The Fifth Element by Luc Besson. He was the scientist tasked with rebuilding Leeloo, and his performance brought a touch of technical coldness that balanced the film's theatricality. He earned a standard character actor's salary and kept looking for the next project without looking back.
But Fairbank was not chasing fame on magazine covers.
In 2014, he joined the Marvel universe to play The Broker in Guardians of the Galaxy. It was a brief role in which heavy makeup hid much of his features. So his voice became his main tool of the trade. Because Fairbank understands that in big-budget cinema, the actor is sometimes just another piece of the set.
In 2022, his career saw a resurgence of interest thanks to the series Andor. He played Ulaf, a veteran prisoner whose death sparks one of the tensest moments in the prison storyline. The fragility of his character contrasted with the harshness of forced labor on the planet Narkina 5. It was a physically demanding shoot despite his age.
Theater has always been his refuge when film became repetitive. He has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company in productions that demanded absolute physical control. But Fairbank knows the bills get paid on camera. So in 2023, he lent his voice to the new version of The Little Mermaid, playing Scuttle in some markets, and took part in lower-budget productions to support first-time directors.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, he played a Portuguese pilot in the series Shōgun. Filming took place at the studios in Vancouver and required specific training to handle the period's nautical terminology. The production used Sony Venice 2 cameras to capture the texture of the beards and the sweat of the actors in the deck scenes.
