Julie Graham moved to London in the mid-1980s at just twenty years old. She had no backup plan. She started out working at the National Theatre and soon realized her place was in front of the camera. Her first appearances in shows like Taggart and The Bill were brief, but they taught her the rhythm of television shoots.
She was a familiar face, but hard to place.
The turning point came in 2000 with At Home with the Braithwaites. She played Megan Hartnoll for four seasons. That role earned her a level of visibility the British industry had not given her until then. Graham had a rare ability to seem like someone you could run into at the supermarket while hiding a storm inside.
And it worked.
In 2003, William and Mary came along. She shared the screen with Martin Clunes, and it became a massive ratings hit. The series explored the romance between an undertaker and a matron. Graham brought a naturalness that kept the plot from slipping into sentimentality. They drew more than eight million viewers for some episodes of the first season.
In 2012, she joined the cast of The Bletchley Circle. The series followed a group of women who broke codes during the war and then solved crimes on their own. Graham played Jean. She was the figure of authority and the woman who kept order in a hostile environment.
Her connection to suspense didn't end there. In 2014, she joined Shetland as prosecutor Rhona Kelly. Her presence on the show lasted until 2019. Graham became a key piece of the narrative machinery of Scottish fiction that decade.
It wasn't all police drama.
During the 2020 lockdown, she decided she wasn't going to sit around waiting for a call from her agent. She wrote and starred in Dun Breedin. The series was shot entirely in the actresses' homes using mobile phones. It dealt with menopause without filters or unnecessary embellishment. The production was distributed independently through digital platforms.
In 2023, she joined the cast of Maternal as Anne. The ITV medical drama explored the struggles of doctors returning from maternity leave after the pandemic. That same year, she filmed Payback, a financial thriller produced by Jed Mercurio in which she played Connie Morris.
In 2024, she joined the second season of Ridley. Her role as Annie Marling keeps her at the forefront of British commercial television. Graham already has over one hundred acting credits on her professional IMDb profile.
The production of Payback had a budget of several million pounds to recreate the financial world of Edinburgh.
