Gary Lewis never planned to become an actor.
He worked at a library in a working-class Glasgow neighborhood, spending his hours among the shelves until film came knocking on his door after he turned thirty. In 1994 he crossed paths with Peter Mullan. It was a chance encounter in an amateur theater group that ended up defining his professional career.
Before filming, he reads the script looking for the social truth behind his character. Lewis is a working-class actor who has never tried to hide his accent or his roots. He started with small parts in films such as Shallow Grave, but his name began to gain real traction on the British independent circuit in the late nineties.
In 1998 he appeared in My Name is Joe under the direction of Ken Loach. That film was the perfect training ground for what came next. Lewis learned that silence in front of the camera can communicate far more than a shouted monologue.
Before shooting Billy Elliot in 2000, Lewis had already worked on Orphans. But it was the role of Jackie Elliot that gave him international exposure he never expected. Nearly five million dollars was the initial budget of that film, which went on to gross more than one hundred million worldwide.
Lewis brings a physical truth you won't learn in drama school. His hands and weary gaze fit perfectly into the drama of British miners during the strikes of the eighties. His performance earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Hollywood wasted no time in calling him.
Martin Scorsese cast him in Gangs of New York in 2002. He worked alongside Daniel Day-Lewis on a complex shoot that stretched over months at the Cinecittà Studios in Rome. Lewis played McGloin, and his physical presence held its own opposite the biggest stars of the moment.
In 2014 he took on the challenge of playing Colum MacKenzie in the series Outlander. The character suffered from a degenerative illness, which required the actor to shoot with a motion-capture system so his legs could be distorted in post-production. He spent three hours a day in makeup before starting to film his scenes in the Scottish landscapes.
But Lewis never abandoned European art-house cinema. In 2009 he worked with Nicolas Winding Refn on Valhalla Rising. It was an extreme shoot in the mountains, where the crew had to cope with hostile weather and nearly impossible logistics. The film had barely any dialogue, and Lewis proved he could carry a story with his presence alone.
Television has given him steady financial stability.
In 2021 he joined the cast of Vigil as Detective Robertson. The BBC series became one of the most-watched dramas in the United Kingdom, with an average audience of ten million viewers per episode. Lewis brought the restraint needed for a plot heavy with political and military tension.
In 2023 he joined the Marvel blockbuster The Marvels, playing Emperor Dro'ge. It was a radical leap in scale compared with his beginnings in social realism. And even though the setting was digital and green screens dominated the set, his way of working didn't change one bit.
During the shoot of the series The Rig in 2023, the production used FirstStage Studios in Edinburgh. Lewis played a geologist trapped on an oil platform under constant humidity controlled by special effects technicians. The series was renewed for a second season, filmed entirely on Scottish soil during 2024.
