Peter Mullan won the Best Actor award at Cannes in 1998 for My Name Is Joe. He was 43 years old and had a face that looked carved from Scottish granite. Before that, he spent years combining political theater with small television roles and a Marxist activism he has never hidden.
He was born in Peterhead in 1954. He grew up in a working-class family with an alcoholic, violent father who shaped his view of the world. That toughness showed in his eyes and in the way he walked in front of the camera. In 1994, he appeared in Danny Boyle's Shallow Grave. He had only a few minutes on screen, but his physical presence was undeniable.
And the gamble paid off.
In 1998, he directed Orphans. It was a dark comedy about grief in Glasgow that almost no one expected to see at an international festival. Four years later, in 2002, he premiered The Magdalene Sisters. It won the Golden Lion in Venice with a raw story about abuse in Irish convents.
The film prompted the Vatican to issue an official protest over the movie's content.
Mullan never apologized for that story.
But his acting career didn't stop with his ambitions as a filmmaker. In 2006, he appeared in Children of Men under the direction of Alfonso Cuarón. He played an immigration officer in a dark, dystopian future. Mullan always fits better on the margins of the system than in studio romantic comedies.
In 2011, he worked with Steven Spielberg on War Horse. The director was looking for someone who could convey the exhaustion of a farmer crushed by debt. Mullan brought a dryness that balanced out the sentimentality typical of American productions.
In 2017, he played Jacob Snell in Ozark. His character was a heroin producer in the Missouri hills who didn't blink when pulling the trigger. Critics noted that his presence could outshine much younger actors. His move into major television productions was therefore a natural evolution of his market.
No red carpet could soften his political speech.
In 2022, he donned the armor and beard of King Durin III in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. It was a shift toward big-budget epic fantasy financed by Amazon. Despite the prosthetic makeup, his gravelly voice and stern gaze remained the anchor of his scenes beneath the mountain.
In 2024, he appeared in the British series After the Flood for ITV. Filming for the production took place mainly in Manchester and Stockport during the first quarter of 2023. The series had a standard production budget for crime dramas on UK public television.
