From gas station music videos to horror

Juan Antonio Bayona was born in 1975 in the Trinitat Vella neighborhood of Barcelona. His father was a movie poster painter, a biographical detail that explains his early obsession with images. Before entering ESCAC, he was already devouring video tapes and dreaming of making films like the American directors of the 1980s.

He started out shooting music videos for bands like OBK and Camela. These were visual pieces made on very tight budgets, yet with a narrative already aiming for emotional impact on the viewer. And he did it with an aesthetic that blended everyday realism with the ambition of Hollywood commercial cinema.

Those years were his real school of survival.

In 2004, he met Sergio G. Sánchez, who handed him the script for The Orphanage. Bayona spent three years getting the project off the ground and needed Guillermo del Toro's support for the industry to trust a debut filmmaker. But the wait was worth it, because the film became an instant box office phenomenon.

In 2007, he premiered this film at the Cannes Film Festival and received a ten-minute standing ovation. Critics praised his ability to handle suspense without falling back on the cheap tricks of the genre. It marked the start of a career in which pain and childhood always go hand in hand.

An obsession with technical detail

In 2012, he premiered The Impossible. Recreating the 2004 tsunami required building a giant water tank at the Ciudad de la Luz studios in Alicante. But the most complex part wasn't the water; it was maintaining the dramatic tension between Naomi Watts and Tom Holland over months of physical shooting.

The film grossed more than $180 million at the box office.

After that global success, he directed A Monster Calls in 2016. In this work, he blended animation with live action to tell a story about grief and loss. Bayona sees cinema as a physical spectacle that should hit audiences right in the gut.

Spielberg gave him full control of the sequel.

In 2018, he directed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom under the supervision of Steven Spielberg himself. He became the first Spanish director to manage a $170 million production for a major Hollywood studio. The assignment was a difficult one, but he managed to inject elements of Gothic cinema into a dinosaur franchise.

The return to raw reality

In 2022, he handled the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The TV series broke budget records and allowed the filmmaker to work on a visual scale unprecedented on the small screen. His name became permanently linked to major international productions.

But Bayona chose to return to Spanish-language filmmaking for his next major project. In 2023, he shot Society of the Snow, a meticulous reconstruction of the 1972 Andes plane crash. To achieve maximum authenticity, the crew traveled to Sierra Nevada and to the actual sites of the tragedy.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2023, the production of Society of the Snow employed more than 300 people and required 140 shooting days in extreme weather conditions. The production team moved three replicas of the Fairchild FH-227D aircraft fuselage to 2,800 meters above sea level to shoot the mountain scenes.
