Synopsis of Penny Dreadful

In London in 1891, clairvoyant Vanessa Ives and explorer Sir Malcolm Murray hire American gunslinger Ethan Chandler to track down Mina, Sir Malcolm's daughter and Vanessa's best friend, who has been kidnapped. Ethan is hiding a dangerous secret. The group is completed by young Dr. Victor Frankenstein, arrogant and awkward in social situations, and by the expert Professor Van Helsing. As they prepare the search, they discover that finding Mina will require unraveling a terrifying mystery that pits them against dark forces. Created by John Logan and produced by Sam Mendes, the series brings together characters from Victorian horror literature and airs on Showtime.

Trivia about Penny Dreadful

The production was going to shoot in the United Kingdom, but in August it was reported that it would move to the Ardmore Studios in Bray and other locations in Dublin, due to Irish tax incentives.

The series premiered with 872,000 viewers, or 1.44 million if repeats are counted. That figure does not include the 900,000 who watched it earlier on Showtime on Demand and the Showtime app.

John Logan decided midway through the second season that the third would be the last, but Showtime did not make that decision public until after the series finale aired.

At the San Diego Comic-Con panel in 2014, Logan revealed that The Island of Doctor Moreau was one of the books he considered for the series and that he would like to use in a future season.

The series won three BAFTA Awards and received thirteen Primetime Emmy nominations, including one for prosthetic makeup in the episode "No Beast So Fierce."

Juan Antonio Bayona directed the first two episodes and set the show's visual tone before other directors took over the remaining episodes.

The spin-off "Penny Dreadful: City of Angels," starring Natalie Dormer and Nathan Lane, was canceled by Showtime after just one season.
