The craftsman who rose from the theater

John Logan spent ten years writing plays in the basements of Chicago before Hollywood came knocking. He wasn't chasing quick fame, but he had an absolute fixation on classic structure and broken characters. In 1996 his play Never the Sinner caught the attention of several producers looking for fresh voices for big-budget cinema.

That text about two real-life killers in the 1920s was his definitive calling card. In 1999, he delivered the screenplay for Any Given Sunday to Oliver Stone and proved he could handle multimillion-dollar budgets without losing narrative control. And he did it without giving up the dense dialogue he had honed on stage.

Logan writes by hand.

In 2000 he co-wrote the screenplay for Gladiator alongside other writers, and his name jumped to the front lines of the industry. That Ridley Scott film earned him his first Oscar nomination and defined his style, rooted in epic drama with Shakespearean touches. But Logan never gave up his work as a playwright, alternating shoots in London with Broadway premieres.

The alliance with Scorsese and agent 007

In 2004, he took on one of his most complex projects with The Aviator. He spent months studying the life of Howard Hughes to build a story that avoided the clichés of traditional biopics of the era. The professional partnership with Martin Scorsese worked so well that they reunited in 2011 for Hugo (a project exploring the origins of cinema through fantasy).

Writing for James Bond was a challenge of a different scale. In 2012 he wrote Skyfall and got critics to accept a more human and vulnerable version of the British spy. The commercial success was massive, with box office earnings of over one billion dollars worldwide. So he repeated the experience in 2015 with Spectre, although the creative results were met with less enthusiasm.

Box office doesn't always forgive.

In 2014 he decided to explore television and created Penny Dreadful for the Showtime network. The series blended 19th-century literary monsters with carefully crafted Gothic aesthetics. Logan personally wrote nearly all the episodes across its three seasons because he wanted to control every nuance of the story. It was one of the rare times a screenwriter of his caliber got so involved in the day-to-day of a television production.

Directing risks and the biographical future

In 2022 Logan made the leap into directing with They/Them (a horror film set in a conversion therapy camp). The film didn't have the impact he hoped for at festivals and received lukewarm reviews for its visual execution. It was a stumble in a career that had seemed infallible until then, but it didn't slow his ambitions with the major studios.

His return to high-voltage screenwriting comes with the script for Michael (the film about Michael Jackson, scheduled for 2025). The project is directed by Antoine Fuqua and has a budget exceeding 150 million dollars. Logan once again faces the challenge of portraying a public figure full of light and shadow and legal contradictions, under the scrutiny of half the world.

Filming of the film about the King of Pop wrapped in mid-2024 after months of shooting in California.
