Synopsis of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels

Los Angeles, 1938. The city is steeped in Mexican American folklore and strong social tension. Tiago Vega is the first Mexican American detective in the Los Angeles Police Department. Alongside his partner Lewis Michener, a veteran of the force, he investigates a murder that draws them into an ancient conflict. On one side are those who follow Santa Muerte, guardian of the dead and guide to the afterlife. On the other are the allies of the Devil. Magda, a demoness who believes humanity is evil, wants to prove it. Created by John Logan for Showtime, the series blends the supernatural with an era marked by social tension and moral dilemmas.

Trivia about Penny Dreadful: City of Angels

Paco Cabezas directed the first two episodes of the series, after having directed four episodes of Penny Dreadful, including the finale of the original series.

The series is described as a "spiritual descendant" of the original three-season story, which was set in Victorian-era London.

The series was shot in Los Angeles with a $24.7 million tax credit and employed more than 350 cast members and 10,000 extras, including stand-ins.

Natalie Dormer was nominated for Best Actress in a Horror Series at the inaugural Critics' Choice Super Awards for her performance.

The first season averaged 348,000 viewers and a 0.03 share among adults aged 18 to 49, according to published ratings data.

John Logan said she already had the storyline for a possible second season planned and hoped to continue the series for a long time, but Showtime never renewed it.
