A knee injury in high school ended his dream of becoming a professional baseball player. Adam Rodriguez was seventeen and had to look for work away from the ballparks. He worked as a bellhop at a New York hotel and also spent months in construction. That period of physical labor ended in 1997 when he landed a supporting role on NYPD Blue.
In 2002 he joined the cast of CSI: Miami to bring Eric Delko to life. The New York-born actor of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent faced a relentless work pace for a decade. The series became a global ratings hit, but his relationship with the production company had serious cracks.
In 2009, the actor temporarily left the series over contract disputes. He returned shortly after as a recurring character and eventually regained his lead role until the show ended in 2012.
Success comes at a price in shooting hours.
But television wasn't his only refuge. In 2012, he took part in Magic Mike under the direction of Steven Soderbergh. The film grossed 167 million dollars worldwide and took the actor out of his procedural comfort zone. That decision allowed him to explore mainstream film without losing touch with the television industry.
Rodriguez always understood that his physique was a working tool. He reprised his role as Tito in Magic Mike XXL in 2015 and closed the trilogy with Magic Mike's Last Dance in 2023.
And his bet on directing paid off.
He began directing episodes in 2011 during his final stint in Miami. This technical side was later consolidated on Criminal Minds, where he joined in 2016 to replace Shemar Moore during his absence. Rodriguez didn't limit himself to acting and directed several episodes, showing that he understood the inner workings of suspense.
In 2020 he took part in the project Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. The series, set in Los Angeles in 1938, explored Mexican folklore and the racial tensions of the era. But the production was canceled after a single season by Showtime.
The revival of classic franchises brought him back to his role as Luke Alvez in 2022. The Paramount+ streaming service launched Criminal Minds: Evolution with a darker, more violent tone than the original CBS version. In 2024, the actor added more than ten directed episodes across various high-budget productions.
He keeps tight control over his public image. Rodriguez avoids tabloid scandals and prefers to focus his interviews on the technical aspects of audiovisual production.
In 2024, production on the seventeenth season of his flagship series confirmed a five-month shooting schedule in Los Angeles.
