Chris Mulkey

The face that keeps the industry running from the shadows

Chris Mulkey was born in Viroqua, Wisconsin, in 1948. He never chased magazine cover stardom or the spotlight of the red carpet. He understood early on that acting means showing up, delivering the work and moving on to the next shoot without making a fuss.

In 1980, he made his big-screen debut in The Long Riders. In this Walter Hill film, he shared the screen with the Keach and Carradine brothers. It was the start of a run of roles in which his square jaw and tough but weary look fit genre cinema perfectly.

He has more than 270 credits in his professional filmography.

It's a number that would impress any agent in Los Angeles. And he has achieved it without needing to be the undisputed star on the promotional posters. His ability to step into a production and instantly lend it credibility has allowed him to work nonstop for five decades.

The Lynch connection and the leap to the front line

David Lynch called him in 1990 to play Hank Jennings in Twin Peaks. His character was an ex-convict trying to fit back into the everyday life of a town full of secrets. That role gave him a visibility that B-movie action films had never offered him.

But Mulkey never wanted to be stuck in one type of role. During the 1990s, he moved from comedy to police drama with remarkable ease. In 1996, he appeared in Broken Arrow under the direction of John Woo, proving he could keep up with the pace of big-budget action blockbusters.

Because Mulkey is a true working actor.

In 2013, he played John Cronan in Captain Phillips. The film earned six Oscar nominations, and he shared the tension with Tom Hanks in a claustrophobic setting. A year later, he appeared in Whiplash (2014) as Uncle Frank, bringing the grounded, domestic realism needed to balance the film's main conflict.

A top-tier supporting actor with a musician's soul

Off set, he spends his time with Chris Mulkey and the Deluxe. It's his blues and country band, with which he plays clubs across California when he has no scripts to memorize. He lost his wife, actress Karen Landry, in 2015 after decades of marriage, and turned to songwriting and constant work.

His fee per shoot day remains at the standard of a high-end supporting actor.

In 2024 he joined the cast of Horizon: An American Saga under the direction of Kevin Costner. He also filmed several episodes of CSI: Vegas during that same period. So his schedule remains as packed as when he began in the late 1970s in small theaters in Minneapolis.

And the industry keeps knocking on his door.

In 2025, he appeared in the independent drama The Senior. The total budget of this production barely topped two million dollars.
