One night a year, every crime is legal.

In a dystopian United States, a political party called the New Founding Fathers of America comes to power after an economic crisis and establishes an annual purge. For twelve hours, any crime, including murder, is temporarily legal. It is 2022, in Los Angeles. James Sandin, a security systems salesman, comes home hours before the night begins, to an upscale suburb, along with his wife, Mary, and their two children, Zoey and Charlie. The family prepares to spend the purge hours inside their home. Ethan Hawke plays James and Lena Headey plays Mary. The film is written and directed by James DeMonaco.

Trivia about The Purge

The idea for the script partly came from a comment made by DeMonaco's wife after a road rage incident, according to the English-language version of Wikipedia.

When seeking funding for the script, DeMonaco and Lemercier received responses that considered it too anti-American because of its themes of violence and gun control.

Ethan Hawke slept on Blum's couch during filming and accepted $10,000 upfront for his role in the movie.

Following the film's success, Ethan Hawke collected an additional $2 million in compensation, according to the source.

On its opening day, the film topped the box office with $16.8 million, and over the full weekend it earned $34.1 million.

A sixth film focused on Leo Barnes, Frank Grillo's character, was considered, but those plans were scrapped in July 2021.

The film was shot in 20 days in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, with a couple of extra days to reshoot scenes; the crew skipped trailers for the stars and used empty bedrooms as dressing rooms and makeup rooms.

James DeMonaco chose to set almost all the action in a single house because he had only 19 shooting days and a budget of $2.7 million.

Quotes by The Purge

There you are. Thank you for accepting my invitation. Tell me, why haven't you delivered the filthy swine to me yet? Are you protecting him? I certainly hope not, Mr. Sandin.
Our equipment is arriving soon. And we will get in. Send out he, or that... will be thee.
I want all these barricades down! Get chains on every door and every window!
