Edwin Hodge was born in 1985 under the sun of Jacksonville, and before turning ten he was already dodging explosions in New York. His debut in Die Hard: With a Vengeance in 1995 was not the typical child-prop role. He played Dexter, Zeus Carver's son, and that early experience on a big-budget production shaped how he understood filming.
The system didn't give him anything.
After that explosive start, television became his constant refuge throughout the 1990s. He took part in Seven at Home and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby while finishing his basic schooling. His brother Aldis Hodge was also in the business, but Edwin always looked for projects that demanded real physical effort or a dry, understated screen presence.
In 2000, he landed a long-running role on Boston Public. There he learned that consistency mattered more than one day of explosive talent. David E. Kelley's series gave him the experience he needed so he wouldn't burn out in an industry that tends to chew up actors who start too early.
And the gamble paid off.
Most actors who land in a horror franchise end up as cannon fodder in the first installment. Hodge's case was different. In 2013, he played the mysterious stranger who seeks refuge in The Purge: La noche de las bestias, and his character had an unexpected impact on audiences.
He is the only actor who appears in the first three films of the franchise playing the same character.
This quirk in the script allowed him to develop an arc that went from absolute vulnerability to leading the armed resistance in the 2016 installment. That shift in range opened the doors of big-budget action cinema to him. In 2021, he shot The Tomorrow War alongside Chris Pratt, where he took on the role of Dorian, a war veteran with a terminal diagnosis who decides to sacrifice himself in a futuristic battle.
But the real steady paycheck came with the police procedurals on broadcast TV. Hodge has a square jaw and a serious gaze that fit perfectly into the mold of the federal agent. In 2022, he joined the cast of FBI: Most Wanted to play Ray Cannon, after appearing in shows such as Six and Mayans M.C..
His addition to Dick Wolf's series was not a last-minute stopgap to fill gaps. The producers were looking for someone who could bring a younger energy to the fugitive-hunting team, and Hodge already brought the discipline of having worked on military cable series.
At the end of 2023, the actor juggled his shooting days in New York with running his own company, Hodge Brothers Productions. He founded it with his brother to develop stories that move away from the typical stereotypes Hollywood assigns to Black actors.
Hodge splits his time between Los Angeles and New York, depending on the production needs of the CBS network. In 2024, the budget per episode of his main series exceeded four million dollars per installment.
