Aldis Hodge entered the film industry through the back door, but with a deafening bang. He was only nine years old when he appeared in Die Hard with a Vengeance playing the son of Samuel L. Jackson. That experience at 1995 taught him that Hollywood doesn't give anything away to child prodigies.
He spent a decade bouncing between supporting TV roles. He worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and ER while trying to figure out how to survive an industry that tends to chew up young actors before they come of age.
Then came the opportunity for Leverage in 2008. For five seasons he played Alec Hardison and was the public face of a team of modern thieves. That role gave him the financial security he needed to start choosing his projects with surgical precision.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2015, he played MC Ren in Straight Outta Compton. The shoot was a trial by fire: he had to handle the pressure of portraying a living rap legend amid the social tensions of the United States.
He continued that commitment to historical stories in 2016 with Hidden Figures. There he brought Levi Jackson to life and shared the screen with a cast that grossed more than $230 million at the worldwide box office.
But Hodge didn't want to be pigeonholed in period dramas. His true passion, beyond acting, lies in engineering and technical design.
Off screen, he designs luxury watches. He is a self-taught horologist who applies the same technical precision to his mechanisms that he brings to his performances. In 2019 he starred in City on a Hill alongside Kevin Bacon. Playing District Attorney Decourcy Ward required him to work on an accent and a physical presence he had never explored on television until then.
It was his ticket to the big leagues.
His leap to mainstream movies came in 2022 with Black Adam. He suited up as Hawkman and had to train for months to reach the demanding physical shape the role required. The production had a budget of 200 million dollars and marked his first real foray into the world of global franchises.
In 2024, he took on the challenge of playing Alex Cross in the series Cross. The character had already been played by Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry (in earlier film adaptations), but Hodge went for a rawer, more grounded version.
He not only acted but also served as an executive producer to control the tone of the storytelling. He got involved in every stage of development to avoid the common pitfalls of James Patterson's literary adaptations.
Creative control is his new obsession.
For the first season's shoot in Toronto, the production used Sony Venice 2 cameras with anamorphic lenses to achieve a cinematic visual texture. The production contract included an automatic renewal clause tied to viewership metrics during the first four weeks of airing.
