Edi Gathegi got into acting by way of a torn ACL. He wanted to play basketball, but his right knee gave out at the University of California. So he signed up for a theater class to fill his schedule and ended up graduating from the Tisch School of the Arts in New York in 2005.
That physical setback saved his professional life.
His debut was low-key in Crank (2006) alongside Jason Statham. Shortly after, Ben Affleck cast him as Cheese in Gone Baby Gone (2007), and there he proved his physical presence could be unsettling without ever having to shout. The director was looking for someone who could intimidate with a glare, and Gathegi exceeded all expectations.
In 2008, the Twilight phenomenon arrived. He played Laurent, a nomadic vampire who gave him instant global visibility among teen audiences. But Gathegi didn't want to be stuck in commercial genre films forever.
In 2011, he joined the mutant saga in X-Men: First Class, playing Darwin. It was a brief appearance that drew criticism from comic book fans over the fate of his character. Darwin's death remains a topic of debate on Marvel forums because of the inconsistency of his adaptive powers.
And the actor quickly learned how the big-budget blockbuster business works.
Television allowed him to explore denser roles. For seven episodes of House, he played Dr. Jeffrey Cole, and later became the relentless Matias Solomon on The Blacklist (2015). His ability to move from vulnerability to pure menace is his greatest asset on screen.
Between 2016 and 2018, he starred in StartUp. In the series, he played Ronald Dacey, a Miami gangster who tries to launder money through cryptocurrency. The show hit number one in streaming viewership several years after its original cancellation.
In 2021, he appeared in the Netflix Western The Harder They Fall. Here, he not only acted but also became interested in the inner workings of large-scale film production. For Gathegi, movies are not just about standing in front of the camera.
James Gunn cast him to play Mister Terrific in the movie Superman, which is set for release in 2025. For this role, the actor went through an extreme physical training regimen to reach the 92 kilos required by the superhero suit. It's a total physical transformation from his time on For All Mankind (2022), where he played the charismatic Dev Ayesa.
Filming of the superhero movie wrapped in August 2024 on the streets of Cleveland.
