Frederick Koehler was born in New York in 1975. His face appeared on millions of American TV sets before he knew what an exclusive contract was. He played Chip Lowell on Kate & Allie for nearly the entire 1980s, and that earned him a label that was hard to shake.
Many child actors disappear once they turn eighteen.
But Koehler decided to study theater at Carnegie Mellon University to avoid being forgotten. He wanted to get away from laugh tracks and the cardboard sets of commercial television. In 1999, he joined the cast of Oz to play Andrew Schillinger. It was a jarring shift for audiences who still remembered him as a harmless teenager.
In the HBO series, he showed a disturbing fragility. His character was a vulnerable young man trapped in a web of racial hatred and extreme violence. And the gamble paid off.
From that moment on, his career moved away from the spotlight and into genre films and high-impact guest roles. In 2002, he appeared in Taken, the miniseries produced by Steven Spielberg about alien abductions. He wasn't looking for the lead role, because he preferred the freedom of the supporting character who disappears from the story.
Paul W.S. Anderson signed him in 2008 for Death Race. His character was named List, a technician obsessed with survival statistics in a maximum-security prison.
Koehler is the only actor, alongside Danny Trejo, to appear in all four films of the original franchise.
He shot Death Race 2 in 2010 and Death Race 3: Inferno in 2013, crossing half the globe to film on location in South Africa. Mid-budget action movies gave him a steady stream of work that many of his generation's peers lost along the way. On those shoots, he learned that technical precision matters more than inspiration on a set full of real explosions.
John Lee Hancock called him in 2021 for The Little Things. He shared scenes with Denzel Washington, playing a store employee who makes viewers uneasy just by holding their gaze. That ability to build tension without saying a word became his best tool as an actor.
In 2024, he joined the cast of Kingdom to play Shane.
Filming took place on location in Georgia under a very tight production schedule. Koehler prefers to work on projects where the script is locked before the cameras start rolling. In recent years, he has appeared in series such as The Resident and 9-1-1, playing characters who tend to have one foot in the margins or in trauma.
His contract for the production of 2024 included specific clauses on the use of facial prosthetics during location shoots.
