Justina Machado was born in Chicago in 1972. Her parents arrived from Puerto Rico and settled on the Northwest Side of the city. Before stepping onto a television set, she honed her craft at the Latino Chicago Theater Company. There she learned that acting was not about posing but about surviving.
In 1996, she landed her first small roles in shows like NYPD Blue. But her real turning point came five years later. It was a call for an HBO project looking for a different tone for cable television.
In 2001, she joined the cast of Six Feet Under as Vanessa Diaz. What started as a recurring role ended up spanning five full seasons. The cast won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series two years in a row for this show.
Her character provided the necessary normalcy in a plot that bordered on the macabre. Because Vanessa was not an ethnic caricature. She was a nurse dealing with depression and grief in the setting of a funeral home. And her chemistry with actor Freddy Rodríguez forced the writers to give her more screen time.
The industry took note of her talent for dry drama.
She appeared in fiction such as Queen of the South in 2016, where she played Brenda Parra. It was a brief role but charged with an emotional violence that contrasted with her earlier work. Still, the American market kept typecasting her in supporting roles until an offer from the old school arrived.
In 2017, she accepted the challenge of Penelope Alvarez in One Day at a Time. It was a revival of the 1975 series produced by Norman Lear. This time the focus was on a Cuban American family dealing with PTSD and sexual identity. Netflix decided to cancel the production after three seasons despite excellent reviews.
The social media campaign was massive. So the Pop TV network acquired the rights to shoot a fourth season in 2020. But the global health crisis interrupted filming of the final episodes, and the series ended abruptly.
But the road was not always upward.
In 2023, she starred in The Horror of Dolores Roach for Amazon Prime Video. It's a story of cannibalism and survival in a gentrified New York. The series was based on a hit podcast and blended horror with sharp, dark humor. It marked her return to the half-hour format, but with a far darker and more physical tone.
Amazon announced the series was officially canceled in November 2023. The project ended its run with a single eight-episode season produced by Blumhouse Television.
