Synopsis of Six Feet Under

In Los Angeles, the Fisher family runs a funeral home. When the patriarch, Nathaniel, dies, he leaves the business in the hands of his two eldest sons, Nate and David, who must learn to run it together. Around them are Ruth, the mother, an emotionally repressed woman trying to build an independent life, and Claire, the rebellious and creative younger daughter. Nate is in constant search of meaning as he faces his own mortality. David, who is still coming to terms with his homosexuality, is tense and rigid at work and in his personal life. Each episode opens with a different death, from a heart attack to a murder, and the series uses these farewells to explore relationships, infidelity, religion and the grief of those who live surrounded by other people's deaths.

The Fishers' house was filmed in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles, at the intersection of Arlington Avenue and a nearby street.

Alan Ball once said the premise of the series came to him after the deaths of his sister and his father.

At the 2002 Emmy Awards, Alan Ball won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for the pilot episode, and Patricia Clarkson won Outstanding Guest Actress.

The series received a Peabody Award in 2002 for its overall excellence and its explorations of life and death.

The main theme, composed by Thomas Newman, won an Emmy for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music in 2002 and two Grammys in 2003.

Starting with the second season, each one had its own promo with a different song, such as "A Rush of Blood to the Head" by Coldplay in the third.
