James Cromwell is six feet, seven inches tall. That height condemned him for decades to be the guy who filled the frame or the supporting player who passed through without getting in the way of the star of the moment. But his career has no patience for rush or passing trends.
The son of director John Cromwell and actress Kay Johnson, he grew up breathing in the dust of Manhattan's stages. His father ended up on the Hollywood blacklist during the McCarthy era. That family trauma shaped his worldview and his distrust of the California studio system.
And the wait was long.
Throughout the seventies and eighties, he racked up appearances on series such as MASH and Little House on the Prairie. In 1976 he made his film debut in Corpse in the Dessert, but nobody seemed to see anything in him beyond a long face and an imposing presence. The work was steady, but recognition was nowhere to be found.
In 1995, he accepted the role of Arthur Hoggett in Babe. He had only sixteen lines of dialogue in the entire film. Yet that economy of words earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor at 55 years old.
That quiet farmer opened the doors to the big offices of Los Angeles for him. In 1997 he played Captain Dudley Smith in L.A. Confidential, proving he could be a fearsome villain behind a façade of order and discipline. His deep voice and icy stare started to rise in value in the market for high-end supporting roles.
And the gamble paid off.
He worked under Frank Darabont on The Green Mile in 1999 and played Prince Philip in The Queen in 2006. Cromwell has always preferred roles with moral complexity because he hates the complacency of flat mainstream cinema. For him, acting is a form of political protest.
His activism is no pose for magazine photos. In 2017 he spent three days in jail after refusing to pay a fine for protesting a gas plant in New York. He also glued himself to a Starbucks counter in 2022 to demand that the price of plant-based milk be lowered.
Cromwell doesn't apologize for his beliefs.
Between 2018 and 2023, he brought Ewan Roy to life in the series Succession. His character was the only one able to tell Logan Roy the truth without fear of losing the inheritance. That mix of moral superiority and contempt for money defines much of his own philosophy of life off camera.
In 2024, he appeared in eight episodes of the series Sugar for Apple TV+, playing Sidney Siegel. He still lives in an eco-friendly house in New York State and has followed a vegan diet since shooting the pig movie 1995. Filming for his latest television appearance lasted just four weeks on locations in California.
