Synopsis of The Young Pope

Lenny Belardo, un joven cardenal de Nueva York, llega al papado cuando el cónclave no logra elegir a los candidatos favoritos. Como solución de compromiso, adopta el nombre de Pío XIII y se enfrenta de inmediato a las tradiciones del Vaticano y al espíritu modernizador del Concilio Vaticano II. Es un Papa ultraconservador que vive recluido en la Santa Sede y se niega a mostrarse en público, convencido de que la gente común no merece contemplarlo. Varios cardenales veteranos temen que sus decisiones dañen a la Iglesia y empiezan a tramar la manera de controlarlo. La serie, creada por Paolo Sorrentino y protagonizada por Jude Law, se emite en Sky Atlantic y transcurre en un Vaticano lleno de intrigas. Como respuesta, el Papa coloca a su lado a la hermana Mary, la monja que lo crio en un orfanato.

Trivia about The Young Pope

Sorrentino says he borrowed from Spike Lee the technique of showing the lead character almost always alone and framed from the waist up, to give the impression that he could be flying.

In July 2017, the series received two Emmy Award nominations and became the first Italian series to be nominated.

HBO contributed 40 million euros to the project's financing, alongside Sky and Canal+, and part of the money came from the European Regional Development Fund.

Much of the filming for the seven-month first season took place at Cinecittà studios, where Vatican interiors such as the Sistine Chapel were recreated.

The premiere of the first two episodes drew 953,000 viewers in Italy, 45% more than the debut of "Gomorrah" and three times the audience of the Italian premiere of "Game of Thrones".

«The Young Pope» fue concebida inicialmente como una miniserie limitada, pero dio lugar a «The New Pope», con Jude Law de regreso y John Malkovich incorporado al reparto.
