Javier Cámara started in Madrid selling tickets in the orchestra seats of the Teatro Fígaro. He had been picking fruit in Albelda de Iregua and dodging the farming career his father took for granted. In 1991 he first stepped onto professional stages with El caballero de Olmedo, without a penny to his name.
He went along with a friend to a TV audition in 1994 and they ended up hiring him instead. That absent-minded priest from the series ¡Ay, Señor, Señor! made him known to millions of viewers. Four years later Santiago Segura handed him a blank-firing pistol in Torrente, the Dumb Arm of the Law.
In 1999, the phenomenon of 7 Lives arrived. The role of Paco Gimeno guaranteed him millions of viewers, a steady paycheck and an enviable status in Spanish comedy across three full seasons.
Nobody expected him to break his contract.
But Cámara feared being trapped forever in cheap jokes, and he walked away from the set at the height of its ratings. He gave up the comfort of a TV paycheck to take a risk on a film role that skirted the abyss.
David Trueba wrote Vivir es fácil con los ojos cerrados for him in 2013. That teacher, determined to meet John Lennon in Almería, gave him his first Goya Award after five lost nominations at previous ceremonies.
The phone rang from Rome.
Paolo Sorrentino called him in 2016 for the shoot of The Young Pope, because Cámara himself had phoned the Italian filmmaker months earlier to ask for an audition. He memorized the lines of Monsignor Gutiérrez in phonetic English, rehearsing them at dawn in his hotel room. So Sorrentino called him again in 2020 for The New Pope, sharing direct scenes with Jude Law and John Malkovich, while in 2017 he played the accountant from the Cali cartel in the third season of Narcos.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2019 he created Juan Carrasco for the series Vota Juan, a character he carried over into Vamos Juan in 2020 and Venga Juan in 2021. The fictional agriculture minister captured the mediocrity, vanity and clumsiness of a certain ruling class without resorting to plain parody. Cámara understood that dark humor worked best when the audience felt secondhand embarrassment.
On that same production, he took the technical reins for the first time, directing several episodes. He discovered that coordinating shots and timing the crew's silences gave him more creative freedom than waiting for orders in front of the monitor.
Cesc Gay cast him again in Sentimental in 2020 and in 53 Sundays in 2026, drawing on his precision for sharp dialogue confined to four walls. But the physical toll came with the shoot of Rapa between 2022 and 2024.
He played Tomás Hernández, a teacher with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis who solves crimes while his body gradually loses mobility. For the third season in 2024, he took on directing the third episode on the coast of Ferrol.
The production logged fourteen-hour shooting days through nonstop storms and a hydraulic crane breakdown that halted the schedule for two days. The crew had to redo ten takes in the mud with no additional budget.
