Leonor Watling is not an actress who sought the spotlight desperately. The daughter of an economist from Cádiz and a British mother, she grew up in the Madrid neighborhood of Chamberí with one foot in each culture. That duality shaped her understanding of acting, because she never needed to overact to convince the audience.
In 1993, she made her film debut in Jardines colgantes by Pablo Llorca. It was a dry, direct learning experience. But mainstream recognition took a few years to arrive.
It was in 1998 that the series Raquel busca su sitio put her on the map in Spanish households. She shared the spotlight with Nancho Novo, and there she showed that her natural charm came through the screen.
Music was never a plan B.
In 2004, she co-founded Marlango with Alejandro Pelayo. The band started as a refuge where Leonor's voice could break without a script getting in the way. The self-titled debut album sold more than fifty thousand copies in just a few months.
Pedro Almodóvar was chosen by Almodóvar in 2002 for Hable con ella. She played Alicia, a ballet dancer in a coma. It was an unusual role because it required her to work on absolute stillness for much of the film.
That film won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and put Watling on the radar of major European productions. In 2008, she shot The Oxford Murders under the direction of Álex de la Iglesia. There she shared scenes with John Hurt and Elijah Wood in a technically demanding, cold shoot filmed in England.
And the risk was worth it.
Leonor has always preferred edgy projects over empty, big-budget blockbusters. In 2005, she worked on Malas temporadas and a year later on Paris, je t'aime. Her genuine bilingualism let her move between industries without the stigma of a forced accent.
With the rise of mass series production in Spain, her image fit darker stories. In 2020, she starred in Nasdrovia for Movistar Plus+. In this drama, she broke the fourth wall to play a successful lawyer who ends up opening a restaurant for the Russian mafia.
In 2023, she took on the role of inspector in Memento Mori, the adaptation of César Pérez Gellida's novels. Filming took place on the streets of Valladolid during the winter months to capture a gray, suffocating atmosphere.
Television gave her back the speed of live performance.
In 2024, she took part in La última noche en Tremore Beach for Netflix. In this miniseries directed by Oriol Paulo, she plays a key character in a psychological thriller filmed on location in Asturias and Puerto de la Cruz.
That same year, she joined the cast of Regreso a Las Sabinas, the first daily series produced by Disney+ in Spain. The project posed a major logistical challenge, with indoor shoots in natural settings and a production pace of one episode per day.
In 2025, the second season of Memento Mori completed post-production with a budget of more than five million euros.
