Madrid, 1980. Enrique Goded is a successful film director looking for his next project. One day, an actor visits his office and says he wants to work with him. The man claims to be Ignacio Rodríguez, his schoolmate and first love, though he now goes by the name Ángel Andrade. He brings a short story titled The Visit, which he wrote himself, and hopes Enrique will turn it into a movie and give him the lead role. Enrique recognizes in him the boy from his school days. Pedro Almodóvar wrote and directed the movie, starring Gael García Bernal and Fele Martínez.

Trivia about Bad Education

Before being chosen for the role, Gael García Bernal had to convincingly demonstrate a Castilian accent in Spanish.

Almodóvar pushed Gael García Bernal so hard during filming that production had to be halted for a week so the actor could recover.

The movie opened the 2004 Cannes Film Festival with its release on May 12, and it was the first Spanish film to do so.

According to the director, the screenplay writing process took more than ten years.

In the United States, the film received an NC-17 rating for an explicitly sexual scene, and the appeal to obtain an R rating was unsuccessful.

The Catholic Church strongly rejected the film, especially in countries such as Poland, which has a high percentage of practicing Catholics.

Filming took place between March and June 2003 in Madrid, Noia, Ortigueira and Valencia; residents of Alella also took part, where a former school of the Escuelas Pías recreated the atmosphere of the Franco era.

Bad Education received five nominations at the 2004 European Film Awards, including Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography and Original Score, and was also nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film.
