Synopsis of Club de Cuervos

After the death of Salvador Iglesias, president and owner of Cuervos de Nuevo Toledo, a top-flight club that boosted the economy of this fictional Mexican city, his two sons fight to take control of the team. Chava, inspired by his father's last words, "Be a captain," wants to turn the club into "the Real Madrid of Latin America," although he has little experience. His half-sister Isabel, neurotic and controlling, believes she is the only one capable of preventing relegation. Things get complicated when Mary Luz Solari claims to be pregnant with Salvador's child and demands a third of the team and of the family fortune. The series, created by Gaz Alazraki and Michael Lam, streams on Netflix and stars Luis Gerardo Méndez and Mariana Treviño.

Trivia about Club de Cuervos

Netflix contacted director Gary Alazraki, who had directed La familia Noble, the highest-grossing Mexican film of all time. Alazraki and his friend Mike Lam began developing the series based on that proposal.

The original idea was a kind of "Game of Thrones" set in the world of soccer, centered on members of a family fighting over leadership of a team.

Production began on January 23, 2015 in the city of Pachuca de Soto, at Estadio Hidalgo, after Netflix announced in January of that year that it would shoot in Mexico.

In October 2023, a club inspired by Cuervos FC was announced for the Kings League Americas. Treviño and Méndez reprised their roles as Isabel and Chava in the announcement trailer.

Karla Souza was initially considered for the role of Isabel Iglesias, but left the project when she was selected for the pilot of the American series "How to Get Away with Murder"; Mariana Treviño ultimately took the role.

The limited budget for the first season nearly prevented the series from finishing filming, so its creators had to call in favors to complete production.

"Club de Cuervos" won the 2017 Fénix Award for Best Comedy Series and received a nomination for the 2018 International Emmy Award in the comedy category.

"La balada de Hugo Sánchez" was the first spin-off of a Netflix original series and featured six episodes centered on the character played by Jesús Zavala.
