The Roar of a Street Dog

Gael García Bernal arrived in London at nineteen to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama. There he learned that an accent is a working tool, not a burden. He was the first Mexican accepted at that institution, and that distance from his country allowed him to observe his own culture with the necessary detachment.

In 2000, Alejandro González Iñárritu pulled him out of the classroom to shoot Amores Perros. That film grossed more than $20 million worldwide. The American industry noticed that young man with the electric gaze, who seemed to make sense of the chaos of Mexico City effortlessly.

And Mexican cinema changed its skin.

But success didn't pin him down to formula films. In 2001, he shot Y Tu Mamá También under the direction of Alfonso Cuarón. That coming-of-age story of sexual and political awakening put an unrepeatable chemistry with Diego Luna on the table. The film cost barely $5 million and ended up nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

During this stage, the actor decided that his career would not belong to Hollywood studios. Because he preferred to shoot in Spanish and tell stories that made him uncomfortable. So he began hopping from one country to another without asking permission from agents in Los Angeles.

Building a Nomadic Empire

In 2004, he founded the production company Canana Films with his partner and friend Diego Luna. They wanted to control the creative process and not depend on the decisions of outsiders in air-conditioned offices. Thanks to that structure, they financed projects others considered too risky or too local.

The industry never saw it coming.

That same year, he played Ernesto Guevara in The Motorcycle Diaries. The shoot covered much of South America and demanded a physical effort few actors of his generation would have accepted. The film won the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language and cemented his face in the collective imagination as the young Che.

But his ambition didn't stop at acting. In 2007, he made his directorial debut with Déficit and later repeated the experience in 2019 with Chicuarotes. His films as a filmmaker steer clear of commercial aesthetics and pursue pure social conflict.

In 2014, he took on the role of Rodrigo de Souza in the series Mozart in the Jungle. It was an unusual choice for an auteur film actor, but the gamble paid off. He won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy in 2016 and showed he could handle sharp, acidic humor with the same precision as drama.

The gamble paid off.

In 2018, he decided to close the Canana Films chapter and launch a new platform called La Corriente del Golfo. The new company focused on projects with a strong social and environmental focus, because for García Bernal, film has always been an extension of his political activism (especially on migration and climate change).

In 2023, he starred in Cassandro, playing professional wrestler Saúl Armendáriz. For the role, he trained for months and mastered the moves of Mexican lucha libre. Critics praised his ability to avoid parody in a world as codified as the ring.

In 2024, he premiered the series La Máquina on Hulu, reuniting with Diego Luna on screen. The project was shot entirely in Spanish for the global market. The production had a technical budget that exceeded the usual standards of traditional Mexican television.
