Synopsis of Mozart in the Jungle

Hailey Rutledge is an oboist who aspires to play with the New York Philharmonic and struggles to win a seat in an orchestra used to doing things the same old way. Her world changes when Rodrigo De Souza, the orchestra's new conductor, arrives. He is an eccentric man who promises to shake up an institution rooted in tradition. Rodrigo wants to transform the orchestra's sound and way of working, which clashes with veteran musicians, union rules and a structure resistant to change. The series follows Hailey as she tries to carve out a place amid rehearsals and concerts, and Rodrigo as he fights to impose his vision. Gael García Bernal plays Rodrigo. Created by Roman Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Alex Timbers, the series streams on Amazon Prime Video.

Trivia about Mozart in the Jungle

The series is inspired by oboist Blair Tindall's memoir, published in 2005, about her career playing with major orchestras in New York.
The show's many oboe solos, played by the lead character and others, are performed by Lelie Resnick, principal oboist of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
Gustavo Dudamel, the real-life inspiration for Rodrigo, makes a cameo as a stagehand who tries to convince Rodrigo to move to Los Angeles.
Much of the series' original music was composed by Missy Mazzoli, including the piece "Impromptu."
The interiors of the main concert hall were filmed at the Performing Arts Center at SUNY Purchase.
Jeff Jensen of Entertainment Weekly gave the series a B−, in a more mixed review than the others cited.
Some critics have pointed out that the orchestra and the main cast are "almost all white," which is unrealistic given the presence of East Asian musicians in real orchestras.
Amazon canceled the series in April 2018 after four seasons and 40 episodes. The decision came despite the show having won two Golden Globes in 2016, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
