Synopsis of The Great

In 18th-century Russia, Catherine arrives at court as a foreigner to marry Peter, the emperor. She soon discovers that her husband is a depraved and dangerous man, surrounded by courtiers who think only of their own interests. Catherine, determined not to be sidelined, observes the palace, studies those who govern it, and looks for a way to climb to the throne. The series, a dark satirical comedy and historical drama, follows that path with a tone that mocks the court and its customs. Tony McNamara created it, and Hulu airs it with Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult starring as Catherine and Peter III. At its heart is an explosive marriage, in which Catherine's ambition clashes with the cruelty of a husband who has made enemies everywhere.

The project was initially planned for six seasons, with plans to bring key historical figures into Catherine's life as the series progressed.
