Synopsis of Peacemaker

Christopher Smith, known as Peacemaker, believes in peace at any price, even if he has to kill whoever it takes to achieve it. John Cena brings this character to life, returning home after the injuries he suffered in the events of The Suicide Squad. With no time to rest, the secret agency A.R.G.U.S. forces him to join a classified operation called Project Butterfly. His mission is to locate and eliminate parasitic, butterfly-like creatures that have taken control of human bodies around the world. Peacemaker must work with agents he has a complicated relationship with, and the clock is ticking. The series, created by James Gunn for HBO Max, takes place after the events of the film.

Trivia about Peacemaker

James Gunn conceived the series after seeing the strength of John Cena as a dramatic actor while filming The Suicide Squad, and wrote all eight episodes during the pandemic.

The soundtrack features hair metal songs, such as "Do Ya Wanna Taste It" by Wig Wam, which plays over the opening credits with a choreographed dance number by the cast.

The opening credits dance number was filmed in a single day in a high school auditorium, in the middle of the series' shooting schedule.

The first season finale set a single-day viewing record for an HBO Max original episode, as audiences grew with each installment.

In the United Kingdom, where the series didn't arrive until after its U.S. run had ended, it was the third most pirated show in the first quarter of 2022.

Freddie Stroma replaced Chris Conrad as Vigilante after Conrad left the series over creative differences.

The second season premiered on August 21, 2025, consists of eight episodes, and added Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodríguez, and Tim Meadows to the cast.

James Gunn ruled out a third season at the time, though they said the characters from "Peacemaker" would return in another DC Universe project and that plans existed to continue their story.
