The Neuroscientist Who Chose Hogwarts

Freddie Stroma never planned to make a living as an actor while dissecting brains at University College London. He was studying Neuroscience, and the lab was his natural habitat until Britain's most profitable film franchise crossed his path. Before finishing his degree, he already had one foot in the major studios.

In 2009, he landed the role of Cormac McLaggen in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. He wasn't the lead, but his ability to be arrogant and magnetic at the same time opened doors for him in the American industry. That production had a budget of 250 million dollars and served as a crash course in filming.

He traded the test tubes for scripts.

Shortly after graduating in 2009, he decided his future was in Los Angeles. In 2011, he appeared in A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song, and a year later he joined the cast of the musical comedy Pitch Perfect. But the real change of direction came when television began looking for roles that could poke fun at his own leading-man image.

From period romance to DC chaos

In 2015, the series Unreal gave him the chance to explore the seamy side of dating shows, playing a fictional bachelor. It was a defining project on a personal level. There he met actress Johanna Braddy, and the couple married in 2016 in a ceremony in Atlanta.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2020, he returned to high-society ballrooms with Bridgerton. His portrayal of Prince Friedrich was brief but effective, as it embodied the ideal of perfection that the lead character ends up rejecting. It was a classic period role that gave no hint of the turn his career would take just two years later.

The year 2022 marked his definitive entry into DC's superhero universe with the series Peacemaker. James Gunn gave him the role of Vigilante after another actor left the project when several episodes had already been shot. Stroma had to film all his scenes at a frantic pace to meet HBO Max's post-production deadlines.

The Vigilante Mask

His portrayal of Adrian Chase stands out for its dry humor and excessive violence, a sharp break from his earlier work in romantic drama. The character required considerable physical effort and the constant use of a mask that hid his face for much of the runtime.

Stroma filmed his action sequences in Vancouver in sub-zero temperatures.

For the second season of Peacemaker, the actor kept the same strict training regimen he started in 2021. Contracts for franchises like this often include exclusivity clauses that limit appearances on rival platforms. Filming for the new episodes was scheduled for the summer of 2024 with a technical crew of more than two hundred people.
