Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter began her career surrounded by lace and porcelain teacups. In 1985, she starred in A Room with a View, and British audiences decided her place was in tearooms and Victorian gowns. That English rose label followed her for an entire decade.

But she wanted to get her hands dirty.

In 1999, she landed the role of Marla Singer in Fight Club. David Fincher was looking for someone who could convey absolute decay, and she took on the challenge, chain-smoking and with messy hair. That shoot marked the end of the angelic Helena. Critics didn't know what to make of her because she broke the mold of the period actress in just two hours of screen time.

And the gamble paid off.

The Refuge in Gothic Style

Her relationship with Tim Burton began in 2001 during the filming of Planet of the Apes. For thirteen years, they formed a professional partnership that developed a very distinctive aesthetic. It wasn't about making conventional commercial films. They preferred marginalized characters and stories with deep shadows.

In 2007, she worked on Sweeney Todd alongside Johnny Depp. She had to take singing lessons for months to meet the demands of the musical. The film's budget reached 50 million dollars, and much of it went into recreating a dark, artificial London.

Then came Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter saga. Her first appearance was in 2007 with Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She specifically asked for her character to have rotting teeth and a much wilder look than in the original books.

Maturing on the Small Screen

Industry recognition came again with The King's Speech in 2010. She won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for an Oscar. But her biggest acting challenge of the last decade was playing Princess Margaret in The Crown.

She played the role during seasons 2019 and 2020. To prepare, she contacted a medium, because she wanted the blessing of the real Margaret before filming began. She approached the job with an almost mystical seriousness.

In 2023, she starred in the miniseries Nolly. She played Noele Gordon, a British television star who was abruptly fired in the eighties. The production was filmed mainly in Manchester and explored sexism in the entertainment industry.

In 2024, she appeared in the film One Life as Nicholas Winton's mother. The film grossed more than 50 million dollars worldwide. Filming took place on locations in Prague and the United Kingdom with a crew of more than two hundred people.

Her contracts often include specific clauses about makeup time.
