Johnny Depp never wanted to be an actor. He arrived in Los Angeles with a guitar over his shoulder and dreams of blowing the roof off stages with his band, The Kids, but the money ran out fast. Nicolas Cage suggested he try his luck at casting calls to pay the rent.
In 1984, he landed a supporting role in A Nightmare on Elm Street. He died swallowed up by a bed in one of the most memorable scenes in 1980s horror. It was a bloody start to a career that always sought out the fringes.
Television brought him money but took away his peace of mind. With the series Nuevos Policías in 1987, he became a teen idol he deeply resented. He tore up his own promotional posters because he couldn't stand the cardboard-idol image the industry had manufactured for him.
And her bet on independent film paid off.
In 1990, he met Tim Burton. That encounter in a café sealed an alliance that first bore fruit in Edward Scissorhands. Depp had barely any dialogue, but he managed to convey the character's full melancholy through a gaze wrapped in prosthetics and white makeup.
He turned down roles in big-budget blockbusters to work with directors like Jim Jarmusch on Dead Man and Terry Gilliam. He preferred broken characters and stories that unfolded on the fringes of society. As a result, he earned a reputation as a difficult actor among the studio accountants in California.
In 2003, Disney executives panicked when they saw the first footage of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. They thought Jack Sparrow seemed drunk or that his sexual orientation would confuse family audiences.
Depp refused to change a single comma of his performance. The film grossed $654 million and launched one of the most profitable franchises of the twenty-first century. But the massive commercial success brought a repetition of formulas that eventually wore out the patience of film critics.
He played Willy Wonka in 2005 and the Mad Hatter in 2010. Costumes and wigs became his comfort zone. Some sectors of the press began to question whether the actor had disappeared for good behind layers of makeup and digital effects.
The European market became his new home.
Legal troubles in London and Virginia sidelined his work at major Hollywood studios for five years. He lost his contract with the Fantastic Beasts franchise in 2020 after the British court rulings. His public image was split into two irreconcilable camps.
In 2023, he returned to the big screen in the historical drama Jeanne du Barry. He played King Louis XV speaking fluent French that needed no dubbing in post-production. The premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earned a seven-minute standing ovation that closed a chapter of professional ostracism.
Because cinema always returns to its roots when the media noise dies down. In 2024 he returned to directing with Modi, a story about the life of painter Amedeo Modigliani in Paris in 1916. The project, financed mainly by European capital, featured Al Pacino in the cast.
The production of Modi had an estimated budget of €15 million.
