Sarah Doukas discovered Kate Moss in 1988 while waiting for a delayed flight at JFK Airport in New York. She was fourteen and stood just 5 feet 7 inches tall, a ridiculous height next to the models who dominated the industry at the time. She didn't fit any mold.

The camera wasn't looking for height but for that elusive gaze she learned to project in front of Corinne Day's lens. That 1990 shoot for the British magazine The Face dismantled the teased hair and heavy makeup of the previous decade with three worn-out garments on the beach at Camber Sands.

From Cult Music Video to the Thames Shipwreck

Film directors soon realized her face worked like a magnet for celluloid without the need for grand speeches. In 1994 she appeared in the video for Delia's Gone alongside Johnny Cash, directed by Anton Corbijn. Nine years later Sofia Coppola filmed her dancing on a metal pole for the song I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself by The White Stripes. Just three minutes of 16mm film were enough to eclipse any Hollywood star.

And nobody asked her to learn a long script.

Taking Control of the Business After the Scandal

In September 2005 a tabloid published private photos taken in a recording studio, and sponsors fled in a stampede. Luxury brands canceled contracts overnight while TV shows held debates about her being expelled from the industry.

But the tabloid press miscalculated the staying power of her brand.

The following year she closed fourteen multimillion-dollar endorsement deals in under twelve months. That blow taught her that relying on outside agencies weakened her financial position every time the media winds shifted. So in 2016 she founded her own management agency, Kate Moss Agency, aiming to control the image rights of new talent and manage their audiovisual production contracts.

Control of the shot switched sides.

Painting, Celluloid and the Test of Scrutiny

In 2002 she posed while pregnant for months for the painter Lucian Freud in a studio in Holland Park. That oil painting was later auctioned in 2005 for three million, nine hundred thousand pounds sterling.

Years later she decided to turn that psychological tug-of-war into a fictional film and took on the role of executive producer to oversee every detail of the script. In 2025 director James Lucas premiered the biographical drama Moss & Freud at the London Film Festival, with Ellie Bamber playing the model and Derek Jacobi in the role of the painter.

Because making a feature film about your own life carries the trap of decorative narcissism. The script chose to confine its two leads within four peeling walls to portray the tension between the aging painter and the model who was learning not to be devoured.

In May 2026, the film reached commercial theaters in the United Kingdom and grossed exactly 35,921 dollars at the box office, a tiny figure that brought the project back to its true scale as an uncompromising art-house piece.

Quotes by Kate Moss

  • I've got a couple of those Gossard Wonderbras. They are so brilliant, I swear, even I get cleavage with them.
  • I don't do any Class A -especially not cocaine - after seeing what it does to people.
  • It was just the time. It was a swing from more buxom girls like Cindy Crawford and people were shocked to see what they called a 'waif'. What can you say? How many times can you say 'I'm not anorexic'?
  • 'Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.'
  • A celebrity now is someone who's on the telly.
