Lily-Rose Depp was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1999 under a media spotlight that would have crushed any other teenager. She grew up between Paris and Los Angeles, watching her father transform his face on screen and her mother dominate the French music charts. In 2014, she decided her path would be acting, not music.
Her debut in Tusk was almost an afterthought. Kevin Smith directed her in a small role where she shared a scene with her friend Harley Quinn Smith. But what seemed like a high school game turned into a statement of intent. She gave up finishing high school to devote herself full-time to film sets and fashion.
It marked the start of a headlong rush forward.
In 2016, she shot The Dancer, playing the legendary Isadora Duncan. French critics took notice of her because she wasn't going for audience pleasing. That same year, she worked alongside Natalie Portman in Planetarium, directed by Rebecca Zlotowski. Back then, her image was inseparably linked to the House of Chanel and the shadow of Karl Lagerfeld.
Louis Garrel called her in 2018 to take part in A Faithful Man. In this film, she showed she could handle the rhythm of French dramatic comedy with surprising dryness. She didn't need grand gestures to convey an ambiguity that became her personal signature. So directors started to see in her something more than a pretty face for magazine covers.
In 2019, she played Catherine of Valois in The King. It was her first major production for a global streaming platform, and she shared the screen with Timothée Chalamet. The film, directed by David Michôd, let her explore a more restrained and subdued register. Her salary for this job reached figures that already placed her among the best-paid actresses of her generation.
But the real earthquake came with television.
In 2023, she starred in The Idol for HBO. The series went through drastic changes behind the scenes and faced harsh criticism for its explicit content and its take on the music industry. She defended the role of Jocelyn with a fierceness few expected. Despite the show's commercial failure, her performance was the only thing the press rescued from the disaster.
After the media buzz of television, she turned to projects with a denser visual style. In 2021, she appeared in Voyagers, a sci-fi thriller exploring isolation in space. The film didn't perform at the box office, but it helped her keep refining her craft in confined, suffocating film sets.
She took on Robert Eggers' challenge to shoot Nosferatu in 2024.
In this production, she plays Ellen Hutter and embraces a Gothic aesthetic that moves her far away from her usual public image. Filming in Prague demanded considerable physical effort due to the freezing temperatures and the complexity of the sets. But she preferred mud and cold to the spotlights of the red carpets in Los Angeles.
The production of Nosferatu had a budget of 50 million dollars, mostly spent on historical reconstruction. Depp shot her main scenes during March and April under a strict confidentiality agreement. The film's final cut came in at 125 minutes.
