Emma Corrin wasn't looking to become anyone's princess when she agreed to read Camilla Parker Bowles's lines during casting auditions for The Crown. It was 2018, and her professional experience was limited to a couple of brief TV appearances and a student short film. But her gift for stillness caught the attention of Netflix producers right away.
In 2020, the premiere of the fourth season of the British series put her face on billboards around the world. Her portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales, earned her a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination before she turned twenty-five. The weight of the crown was not physical but media-driven.
And the system tried to typecast her career.
After her massive breakthrough, Corrin decided to step away from conventional period dramas to explore projects with more psychological depth. In 2022, she starred in My Policeman alongside Harry Styles and pushed female desire to its limits in the version of Lady Chatterley's Lover directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre. The Netflix film racked up more than 40 million viewing hours in its first ten days of release.
During that same period, the British press scrutinized her decision to identify as nonbinary. Corrin responded from the stage of the Garrick Theatre in London. In 2022, she led the adaptation of Orlando by Virginia Woolf, and critics were unanimous about her ability to carry hour-long monologues without missing a beat.
In 2023, she took on the role of Darby Hart in the miniseries A Murder at the End of the World. Filming in Iceland under extreme temperatures was a demanding shoot that tested her physical endurance in natural outdoor settings. Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij designed the amateur detective character with her icy gaze specifically in mind.
Taking risks has always been the priority.
Her big break into mainstream movies came in 2024 when she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She played the villain Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine under director Shawn Levy. For the role, she had to sit through three hours of daily makeup sessions designed to completely hide her hair.
That same year, she appeared in the new version of Nosferatu directed by Robert Eggers. The shoot took place at Barrandov Studios in Prague and in remote locations in Romania to capture an authentic Gothic atmosphere. She shared the cast with Bill Skarsgård and Lily-Rose Depp in a production that avoided green screens whenever possible.
So her career moved decisively away from the image of aristocratic fragility from her early days. Her academic training at St John's College, Cambridge, allowed her to approach scripts from an analytical, almost scholarly perspective. Yet she prefers to trust her instincts once the lights come on on set.
Her contract for the Marvel production in 2024 included confidentiality clauses that barred her from discussing any details of the shoot with immediate family for eight months.
