Daniel Ings isn't the kind of actor who seeks the center of the frame out of ego. He started out training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School after attending the University of Lancaster. There he learned that the craft is more about waiting than acting.
And the wait wasn't especially short.
His early years were marked by fleeting roles in series such as Peep Show or Casualty during 2010 and 2011. There were no big media campaigns or red carpets. Just small parts that helped him pay the rent in London while he tried his luck in commercial theater.
In 2014, Lovesick arrived. The series was originally titled Scrotal Recall, but the title was so bad that they had to change it so audiences would take it seriously. Ings played Luke, the shallow, womanizing friend who hid an almost pathetic vulnerability.
That production is where he set his main career milestone. He has a strange mix of British arrogance and emotional awkwardness that is hard to replicate. His characters are often guys who think they're in control but are one step away from total collapse.
In 2017 he put on the uniform for The Crown. He played Mike Parker, the private secretary to the Duke of Edinburgh during the first two seasons. It was a dry, restrained role that pulled him away from pure comedy and into the offices of Buckingham Palace.
Some actors shy away from making the audience dislike them. Ings does the exact opposite. In I Hate Suzie, during 2020, he played Cob, a husband who reacts in a human but despicable way to a very public relationship crisis.
He doesn't mind that audiences want his character to fail. In fact, he seems to enjoy playing privileged men who fall apart because of their own foolishness. So when Guy Ritchie called him for The Gentlemen in 2024, the fit was automatic.
Freddy Halstead is his most unhinged creation.
For this role he spent hours dressed as a chicken while consuming fictional cocaine at a mansion in the English countryside. Critics praised his ability to avoid coming across as a caricature in a situation of pure visual excess.
His work on The Gold during 2023 also followed that gritty realism. He plays Archie Osborne in a story about the Brink's-Mat gold bullion robbery of 1983. It's a crime drama where the tension is measured in silences and sideways glances.
And the gamble paid off.
Ings lives in Wiltshire with his wife and their two children. He prefers to keep his private life away from the tabloids and rarely gives interviews unless a premiere is involved. The contract for the second season of The Gentlemen was signed with a confidentiality clause covering the final number of episodes.
