Before winning the Oscar, she cleaned other people's homes and worked as a temp secretary in offices in London. There was no overnight explosion of fame and no agent discovered her in a café. Her training at the Bristol Old Vic theater school gave her technique, but the reality of the industry gave her patience.
During the 1990s, her name did not appear in any major cast.
In 2003, she met David Mitchell and Robert Webb to take part in the cult series Peep Show. It was her first serious exposure to British audiences. That point-of-view comedy typecast her for a time in roles as the funny neighbor or the everyday woman. But she was after something else.
Paddy Considine trusted her to star in Tyrannosaur in 2011. It was a hard hit. She played an abused woman who seeks refuge in religion and alcohol. International critics noticed her for the first time outside the circuit of easy laughs.
And it worked.
In 2013, the phenomenon of Broadchurch arrived. The ITV crime drama put her in living rooms across the United Kingdom. Playing Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller demanded an level of emotional exhaustion that she herself has described as physically painful. Because Colman doesn't use schoolbook tricks to cry.
In 2018, filming began on The Favourite under the direction of Yorgos Lanthimos. The Greek director asked her to gain fifteen kilos to play Queen Anne. Colman agreed without hesitation because the character's mental fragility mattered more to her than her own physical image. That role won her the Oscar for Best Actress at the 2019 ceremony.
She founded her own production company, South of the River Pictures, with her husband Ed Sinclair. In 2021, they produced the miniseries Landscapers, in which she played a real-life killer based on events that took place in Nottinghamshire. That meant she gained full control over her career.
In 2023, she appeared in The Bear as Chef Terry in a single episode shot in just two days. By 2024, she provided the voice and physical performance in the film Paddington in Peru and starred in the black comedy Wicked Little Letters.
She never rehearses her crying scenes before the camera starts rolling.
She prefers to save the emotional impact for the first take. On the set of The Lost Daughter in 2021, director Maggie Gyllenhaal noted that Colman can go from laughter to sobbing in under five seconds. She has won four BAFTA Awards and two Volpi Cups at the Venice Film Festival.
Her contract for the seasons of The Crown filmed between 2019 and 2020 included a strict confidentiality clause covering the production details of Buckingham Palace.
