Synopsis of The Crown

The Crown is a historical drama series created by Peter Morgan for Netflix and starring Claire Foy. It begins in 1947 with the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and follows the young woman on her path to the British throne. Elizabeth must balance her state duties with a marriage that is still searching for its place. Her sister, Princess Margaret, wants to marry Captain Peter Townsend, and the royal family and the government put obstacles in the way of that relationship. The first episodes span the years up to 1955, with Winston Churchill leading the government, and show how the monarchy faces a country that is changing around it.

Trivia about The Crown

Claire Foy won an Emmy for her portrayal of the young queen in the episode "48:1," the eighth of the fourth season.
British Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden and actress Judi Dench proposed that the series carry a fiction disclaimer at the beginning.
Manchester stood in for New York, while Málaga and Almería doubled for Sydney and other Australian settings.
The Brooklyn Museum displayed costumes from The Crown and The Queen's Gambit in its virtual exhibition The Queen and the Crown.
The death of Queen Elizabeth II occurred during filming of season six, so production was temporarily halted when it was announced and paused again on the day of her funeral.
To recreate the Paris hotel where Diana and Dodi had dinner before the accident, the crew combined seven locations across three countries, including Elstree Studios.
Part of the scenes depicting William and Kate's first meeting were shot on the real campus of the University of St Andrews, though other locations had to be used to complete them because the campus had changed.
Buckingham Palace was never used as a filming location: its interiors and exteriors were recreated using sets at Elstree Studios and several historic buildings across the United Kingdom.
